David Luoma, MD Awarded for Achievements

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONCORD, N.C., July 28, 2004 - David Luoma, MD, a third year resident at the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program (CFMRP) sponsored by NorthEast Medical Center has been awarded the American Academy of Family Physicians/Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Graduate Medical Education in Family Practice. This award recognizes outstanding family medicine residents for demonstrated leadership ability, community involvement, social commitment, exemplary patient care and interpersonal relationships.

“Dr. Luoma is the first resident from our program to receive this prestigious award,” said Dr. Mark Robinson, program director of CFMRP. “This is a great honor not only for Dr. Luoma, but also for Northeast Medical Center and Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program.”

Dr. Luoma has provided servant leadership to his community since his medical school training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. During medical school he served as co-president of the UNC Students Assisting Latinos Speakers Association. While a post-baccalaureate student at UNC, Dr. Luoma conducted migrant worker screenings and translated for health care providers.

During 2002-2003, Dr. Luoma was elected by fellow residents to be the resident representative to the NCAFP Foundation board. This past year he was again elected by his peers to be the NCAFP Resident Director Elect in order to represent resident interests at the state and national level.

“Dr. Luoma’s clinical skills are very well developed,” Dr. Robinson said. “He can quickly shift gears from a well child visit to an acute coronary syndrome. He has proven leadership skills, provides servant leadership to his community, and has earned the admiration and respect of our faculty, patients, staff, and residents not only for his clinical skills, but for his interpersonal skills as well. We are very proud to have Dr. Luoma in our residency program and our community.”
