___The primary care sports medicine fellowship is a one-year program designed to provide an additional education and experience opportunity for those interested in sports medicine as a part of their professional career. Our program is focused on continuing the physician's skills in family practice while gaining direct experience in sports medicine and musculoskeletal care by assuming the primary role as team physician at the high school level and taking an active role in the coverage at the Division II level in all sports through Catawba College. The sports medicine fellow works in a variety of settings, including the training room, sidelines, and clinically in the orthopedic office and in our dedicated Sports Medicine and Injury Center under the supervision of faculty who have extensive experience in sports medicine.
___The fellowship is a fully accredited program of Carolinas Medical Center - NorthEast and the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program, which is affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Charlotte Area Health Education Center. Kevin E. Burroughs, MD is the Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship and has a CAQ in sports medicine. Dr. Burroughs is also active nationally through the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, as well as in the State, as he serves on the Sports Medicine Advisory Committees for the North Carolina Medical Society and the North Carolina State High School Athletic Association. Dr. Kate Walker is the Assistant Director of the fellowship, and also holds a CAQ in sports medicine. Additional faculty includes community-based orthopedists with active sports medicine practices; a musculoskeletal radiologist; and additional ancillary medical staff, including a Pharm. D., psychologists, a dietician, and an exercise physiologist. Other community faculty in various disciplines participate in teaching elective experiences.
___The sports medicine fellow's education occurs through a variety of clinical settings, including sports medicine clinics, orthopedic clinics, training room experiences, physical therapy, surgery, podiatry, hand surgery, primary care and event coverage. Our faculty helps provide sports coverage for all six high schools in Cabarrus County. Catawba College is the primary collegiate experience. Catawba is an NCAA Division II school with approximately 1,400 students. The college participates in the South Atlantic conference and offers baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Catawba also has a very active athletic training program headed by Bob Casmus, ATC-L. The fellow will have teaching opportunities in the athletic training program both in class and in the training room environment. Additional coverage opportunities include running events and soccer tournaments, as well as other major events, such as the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington through affiliation with other sports medicine programs.
___Additional professional development is expected in scholarship. We expect fellows to develop and complete a research project and plan to publish and/or present their findings at a state or national meeting. Additionally, the fellow is expected to write a review article or case report for publication.
Mentoring in research and scholarship is available on site from our faculty. There are also opportunities to write Clinical Inquiries for the FPIN network. The goal of this requirement is to allow development of skills in writing, critical literature analysis and basic research. Teaching is also an emphasized component of the fellowship experience. Opportunities for this will be ongoing throughout the year and will include lectures at the high school, college and medical student/resident level.
___The fellow has extensive game and sports coverage so that during the course of the year he/she attends between 50 to 100 athletic contests.
The Sports Medicine Fellowship experience will provide a balanced experience of clinical care in family practice, primary care sports medicine, orthopedics, and preventive medicine. The fellow will develop academic skills, which will enable them to become teachers for their patients and community, as well as prepare them for opportunities in academic medicine. The fellow will garner these additional skills while maintaining exceptional skills as a family physician.
